When you should receive an estimate
Usually, if you do not have or use health insurance, your provider must give you a Good Faith Estimate when you request one or schedule care at least three business days ahead. Tell the office that you are paying without insurance.
How soon to expect it
- Care scheduled 3-9 business days ahead: within one business day.
- Care scheduled 10 or more business days ahead: within three business days.
- An estimate requested before scheduling: within three business days.
Keep your written estimate
Save it and compare it with your bill. It describes expected charges from that provider; separately scheduled services or unforeseen care may not be included.
If the bill is higher
If one provider bills at least $400 above that provider's estimate, you may qualify for the federal dispute process. It generally must be started within 120 days of the initial bill. See CMS for eligibility and help.
