MFC / A term, explained

What does “subluxation” mean?

The word has different meanings in medicine and chiropractic. Understanding that distinction helps you ask clearer questions about care.

The medical meaning

In medicine, a subluxation is a partial dislocation of a joint. That is different from a general description of stiffness or restricted movement.

The chiropractic concept

Some chiropractic descriptions use “vertebral subluxation” for a theoretical problem involving spinal movement or function. This concept is not evidence that the spine causes unrelated disease.

Symptoms need context

Pain or stiffness alone cannot tell you which structure is involved. A clinical explanation should connect your symptoms and examination findings with a specific working diagnosis.

Focus on the proposed care

Ask what a treatment is intended to improve, what evidence supports it, and how its effects will be measured. Broad promises about restoring all aspects of health are not a substitute for those answers.

Ask for plain language

  • What do you mean by this term in my case?
  • Which findings support that explanation?
  • How would the treatment change my daily function?

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Does the term mean a bone must be put back in place?

Not necessarily. Clarify which meaning is being used; a true partial dislocation requires appropriate medical assessment.
