More than low back pain
Sciatica describes symptoms associated with irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. Pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness may extend through the buttock and down a leg. Not every leg symptom is sciatica, and back pain alone does not establish it.
Explain what you are noticing
An assessment considers your symptom pattern and health history. Tell the doctor whether your ability to walk, sit, sleep, or use your foot has changed.
- Where symptoms travel and when they started.
- Any new or worsening weakness or loss of sensation.
- Previous medical evaluations, injuries, or treatment.
Discuss a suitable plan
Treatment choices depend on the findings and may include exercise advice, other conservative options, or medical referral. Ask how progress will be reviewed and what symptoms should prompt a different level of care.
YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
When do leg symptoms need emergency care?
Seek emergency help for new bladder or bowel difficulties, numbness around the groin or bottom, or severe or worsening weakness or numbness in both legs. Do not wait for a routine appointment.
