Ergonomics

Small changes to your workspace can support a more comfortable day.

Fit the task to the person

Ergonomics considers how equipment, surroundings, and work routines fit the person using them. There is no single workstation setup that suits every body or every task. Comfort and the demands of your work both matter.

Review the whole setup

A useful review looks beyond the chair. Consider what you reach for, where you look, and how long you stay in one position.

  • Screen position and whether text is easy to see.
  • Keyboard and mouse placement, with room for your arms.
  • Support for your back and feet.
  • Opportunities to change tasks and positions.

A desk example to discuss

If you repeatedly twist toward a screen or reach far for a mouse, describe that task before buying new equipment. Review how your screen, keyboard, chair and frequently used items fit together. Small changes can be tried one at a time; an equipment change does not diagnose pain.

  • Can you see the screen without repeatedly leaning or turning?
  • Can your shoulders relax while your keyboard and mouse are within comfortable reach?
  • Are your feet and back supported in the position you use?
  • Can your routine include changes of task or position?

Bring your routine to the visit

Describe the tasks associated with symptoms and how long you typically perform them. A photo of your workspace can help explain the setup. Persistent pain still deserves a clinical assessment; equipment changes do not identify the cause.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Do I need an expensive chair or standing desk?

Not necessarily. OSHA describes simple, inexpensive adjustments and a setup tailored to the user. Start by identifying the task and fit problem before choosing equipment.
